What Is Anemia?
Anemia is a condition in which the human body produces lower-than-normal levels of healthy red blood cells to the extent our well-being is compromised due to poor oxygen-rich blood. This public health challenge is mainly driven by food insecurity and inadequate dietary intake of iron, vitamin B12, or folic acid.
Children are particularly vulnerable, as anemia considerably increases morbidity and mortality. Anemia is associated with adverse birth outcomes, impaired cognitive and behavioral development, and decreased work productivity in adulthood, among other health and socioeconomic consequences affecting the quality of life.

According to the World Health Organization, anemia affects approximately 42% of children under the age of 5 worldwide, resulting in 1.5 million deaths each year. Despite efforts to address the issue, anemia continues to be a significant health problem in developing countries, with little progress in reducing its prevalence in regions such as Latin America and the Caribbean, East Asia and Pacific, Middle East and North Africa, South Asia, and Sub-Saharan Africa over recent years.
